Argentine President Javier Milei is under intense scrutiny following his promotion of a relatively unknown cryptocurrency, which saw a meteoric rise in value before collapsing, leaving many investors facing heavy losses. The controversy has ignited a political firestorm, with opposition leaders accusing Milei of endorsing a fraudulent scheme, an allegation his administration strongly denies.

The Social Media Post That Sparked a Scandal

The uproar began when Milei posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he boasts over 3.8 million followers. His message praised the $LIBRA cryptocurrency project, calling it a private initiative aimed at fostering economic growth in Argentina. However, just hours later, the post was deleted.

In a follow-up statement, Milei distanced himself from the project, clarifying that he had no prior knowledge of its details. He stated that after learning more about it, he chose to withdraw his endorsement. His office later described the incident as an unintentional mistake.

Government Investigation Underway

Amid growing backlash, the presidency announced an official investigation into the matter. The Anti-Corruption Office has been tasked with determining whether any government officials, including Milei himself, engaged in misconduct.

Authorities are now reviewing whether the cryptocurrency’s rapid rise and fall was part of a coordinated pump-and-dump scheme, a manipulation tactic where asset prices are artificially inflated before being offloaded at a profit, leaving unsuspecting investors at a loss.

Market Chaos: A Rapid Rise and Fall

When first launched, $LIBRA was largely controlled by a small number of digital wallets, with its initial value being negligible. Following Milei’s endorsement, the cryptocurrency’s price surged to nearly $5 within hours, only to collapse to mere cents shortly thereafter, as per trading application data.

Crypto security specialist Pablo Sabbatella highlighted red flags surrounding the project. He noted that the website had been registered just a day before Milei’s post—a common characteristic of fraudulent schemes. Additionally, the token itself was created only minutes before the president’s endorsement.

According to Sabbatella, large holders, commonly referred to as “whales,” acquired $LIBRA at almost no cost. When its value skyrocketed due to Milei’s post, they swiftly sold their holdings, raking in enormous profits. Reports indicate that some investors made upwards of $4 million in mere hours, with one account allegedly profiting as much as $87 million.

Political Fallout and Calls for Impeachment

Opposition leaders have seized on the controversy, with the Union for the Homeland coalition announcing their intention to push for Milei’s impeachment. Critics argue that his actions irresponsibly misled the public, causing financial harm to thousands of investors.

However, Milei’s allies have dismissed impeachment efforts as a political maneuver. Congressman Diego Santilli labeled it an attempt to undermine the presidency, while Security Minister Patricia Bullrich defended Milei’s right to express his views. Bullrich likened his social media post to a president visiting a factory, arguing that such actions do not necessarily equate to official government endorsements.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident has added to the turbulence of Milei’s presidency, testing his administration’s credibility and raising concerns about the government’s stance on cryptocurrency regulation.
