Pope Francis Delivers Easter Blessing After Hospital Recovery

Pope Francis made a heartfelt appearance on Easter Sunday, greeting a sea of joyful pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. Although he has been largely absent from leading Holy Week and Easter services due to recent health challenges, the 88-year-old pontiff emerged from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to offer the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing — to the City of Rome and the World.

This marked his most significant public engagement since being discharged from the hospital, where he spent 38 days battling double pneumonia. The illness had brought him close to death, and he continues to suffer from respiratory issues, which limit his ability to speak and raise his arms. Despite these challenges, Pope Francis managed to say, “Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter,” without using the nasal oxygen cannula he has previously relied on.

The Easter message, which includes an indulgence or remission of the effects of sin, was read aloud by an aide while the Pope looked on. Traditionally, only the pope may give this special blessing, making this appearance especially meaningful for the Catholic faithful worldwide.

Before addressing the crowds, Pope Francis met privately with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, a practicing Catholic. According to the Vatican, the two exchanged Easter greetings. This brief meeting followed a Saturday discussion between Vance and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Their conversation touched on mutual concerns including immigration, the global status of Christianity, and religious freedom.

The Vatican’s statement mentioned that topics such as the plight of migrants, prisoners, and refugees were discussed during the meeting. Meanwhile, Vance’s office emphasized their shared Catholic values, President Trump’s stance on promoting world peace, and the persecution of Christians around the globe.

The Pope’s meeting with Vance comes just weeks after Francis voiced concern over the Trump administration’s immigration policies. He notably rejected Vance’s earlier use of the theological concept “ordo amoris” to justify those policies, making their Easter exchange particularly notable.

Despite his ongoing recovery, Francis has resumed limited public duties with brief appearances over the Easter weekend. On Holy Thursday, he spent 30 minutes at a Rome prison, and on Saturday, he visited St. Peter’s Basilica for a vigil service.

Doctors have recommended the Pope avoid large gatherings for the next two months, but Francis has continued to defy expectations. On Easter, he waved to the faithful from the popemobile — his first such gesture since hospitalization — reinforcing his commitment to serving despite physical limitations.

The Vatican also released the full text of his Easter message. In it, Pope Francis issued a strong appeal for global peace, particularly calling attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “I appeal to the warring parties: call a ceasefire, release the hostages, and come to the aid of a starving people that aspires to a future of peace,” he urged.

As Catholics worldwide celebrated Easter, the Pope’s presence — though physically subdued — symbolized resilience, hope, and an unwavering dedication to his spiritual mission.
