At least 18 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night as thousands of passengers rushed to board trains heading toward the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. and resulted in the deaths of nine women and five children, according to local authorities.
Overcrowding Leads to Disaster
Officials reported that two delayed train services and a surge in passengers led to dangerously high congestion at the station. Deputy Commissioner of Police KPS Malhotra stated that the situation spiraled out of control for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, leading to panic and chaos.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as overwhelming, with people desperately trying to move through the packed station. “It was impossible to breathe, let alone move. Everyone was pushing, and then people started falling,” said one survivor.
Maha Kumbh Mela’s Massive Crowds
The stampede occurred as thousands of devotees were en route to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage that draws millions of worshippers. Over six weeks, the event is expected to host an estimated 400 million people, making it the largest peaceful gathering in the world.
This tragedy comes just weeks after another deadly crowd crush at the festival itself, raising concerns over crowd management and safety measures.
Government Response and Condolences
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured. “I am deeply distressed by this tragic loss of life. The authorities are doing everything they can to assist those affected,” Modi shared on social media.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister of Railways, also expressed his grief and assured the public that rescue efforts were underway. “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. Our team is working round the clock to assist all those impacted,” he said.
Authorities dispatched four special trains to evacuate passengers from the station, and security forces were deployed to restore order. Officials have since confirmed that the situation is under control.
Ongoing Safety Concerns
The incident has reignited concerns over crowd safety at major transportation hubs, particularly during large-scale events like the Maha Kumbh Mela. While authorities attempt to manage the influx of devotees, critics argue that better planning and crowd control measures are needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As families mourn their loved ones, questions remain about how to improve safety at railway station and other high-traffic areas. With millions still expected to travel for the festival, officials are under pressure to implement stricter measures to ensure such a disaster does not happen again.
For now, rescue teams and authorities continue their work, offering support to those affected as the country reflects on yet another heartbreaking loss caused by overcrowding and mismanagement
