US and Israel Issue Security Alerts Over Potential Threats in Sri Lanka

Both the United States and Israel have issued warnings about a possible attack targeting tourist locations in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka, prompting heightened security measures and travel advisories. The alerts were released on Wednesday, urging caution for travelers, especially around popular tourist destinations.

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka announced that it had received credible information indicating a potential attack in the Arugam Bay area, a well-known surf spot and tourist destination on the country’s eastern coast. Due to the threat, the embassy imposed an immediate travel restriction for its personnel, advising U.S. citizens to avoid the area until further notice. “We strongly urge U.S. citizens to refrain from visiting Arugam Bay and to remain vigilant,” the embassy stated, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Similarly, Israel’s National Security Council issued a security alert, raising its travel advisory for Sri Lanka to the highest level, specifically for Arugam Bay and the southern and western coastal areas. The advisory mentioned credible terrorist threats and recommended that Israeli citizens “immediately leave Arugam Bay and the coastal areas,” including popular cities like Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Weligama. Israeli authorities also urged travelers to move to Colombo, the capital city, where local security forces are more active, if they cannot leave the country immediately.

The alert from Israel’s security council further advised citizens to avoid displaying symbols or attire that could identify them as Israeli, including clothing with Hebrew writing or religious symbols. This measure is intended to reduce the risk of targeted threats while the potential for danger remains.

While both advisories highlight credible intelligence about the threat, neither the U.S. nor Israel provided specific details about the nature of the potential attack. Sri Lankan officials have not yet commented on the alerts, and there has been no indication of any immediate incidents. However, the warnings have raised concerns, especially considering the island’s history with terrorism. The last major attack in Sri Lanka occurred in April 2019, when coordinated suicide bombings targeted churches and luxury hotels, resulting in 270 deaths and more than 500 injuries.

The current security concerns come at a sensitive time, with recent protests in Sri Lanka against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Although there is no confirmation linking the potential threat to these demonstrations, authorities are not taking any chances, and precautionary measures have been implemented. Travelers are advised to stay informed about the situation and follow guidance from local authorities and their respective embassies.

Given the recent advisories, tourists and locals alike are reminded to stay alert, avoid crowded or high-profile locations, and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The situation is being monitored closely, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
