An Italian surfer, Giulia Manfrini, tragically lost her life after a rare and fatal accident while surfing off the coast of Indonesia’s West Sumatra. The 36-year-old was surfing in the Mentawai Islands, a well-known and remote surfing destination, when she was struck in the chest by a sharp-billed fish, leading to fatal injuries.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time off the southern coast of Siberut Island. Lahmudin Siregar, the acting head of the Mentawai Islands disaster management agency, confirmed that Manfrini was impaled by what is believed to be a swordfish while she was surfing. The sharp bill of the fish pierced her upper left chest, creating a wound approximately five centimeters deep, which ultimately led to her death.
Manfrini was not alone during the incident. Her business partner, James Colston, and other locals attempted to save her after the freak accident. In a heartfelt statement on social media, Colston expressed his grief, stating, “Even with the brave efforts of her partner, local resort staff, and doctors, Giulia couldn’t be saved. We believe she died doing what she loved, in a place that she loved.” Colston described the event as a freak accident, noting the deep impact her passing has had on those who knew her.
The incident has been labeled a rare and unfortunate event. Needlefish and swordfish, both species known for their elongated, sharp bills, can pose a danger to humans, but such fatal incidents are exceptionally uncommon. Hidden Bay Resort Mentawais, where Manfrini was a client and friend, confirmed the tragic details, explaining that she was hit in the chest by a needlefish and died almost instantly. Two nearby witnesses rushed to provide first aid and took her to the Pei Pei Pasakiat Taileleu health center, but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.
Manfrini was a co-founder of AWAVE Travel, a company she and Colston established to organize surfing trips to popular destinations, including the Mentawai Islands. The company’s website highlights her passion for adventure sports, revealing that she was a former professional snowboarder who found her way to surfing and fell in love with it. Her passion for the sport took her around the world, always in pursuit of the perfect wave.
As news of her passing spread, condolences poured in from those who knew her and were touched by her spirit. Fabio Giulivi, the mayor of Venaria Reale, a town near Turin in northern Italy where Manfrini’s family resides, expressed his deep sympathy. “The news of her death has left us shocked and makes us feel powerless in front of the tragedy that took her life so prematurely,” said Giulivi. “To mum Chiara, dad Giorgio, and all the people who loved her, a heartfelt hug from me and the whole City.”
Colston, in his tribute, reminisced about her infectious energy and love for life. “Giulia couldn’t travel without people falling in love with her smile, laugh, and endless stoke,” he wrote, illustrating how she brought joy to everyone she met. Her tragic passing has been a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of life, even in places where one feels most at peace.
The Mentawai Islands, renowned for their excellent surf conditions, have seen few accidents of this nature, and authorities continue to investigate the specifics of this unfortunate event. For Manfrini, her final days were spent doing what she loved most, riding waves in a place she adored.
