US Measles Outbreak Grows as Deaths Raise Concern

The United States is experiencing its most serious measles surge in decades, with thousands of confirmed infections reported this year and deaths occurring in Pennsylvania. The US measles outbreak has raised concerns about the return of a disease that was declared eliminated from the country in 2000.

As of September 17, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recorded 3,471 confirmed measles cases across the United States in 2026. Most of the cases were connected to outbreaks.

Pennsylvania Reports Four Deaths

Pennsylvania has become one of the major centers of the current outbreak. State health officials reported 731 confirmed cases across 38 counties as of September 16, along with 141 hospitalizations and four measles-associated deaths.

The two latest deaths were reported on September 15. State officials said both individuals were unvaccinated. Earlier deaths involved two infants in Lancaster County who were too young to receive the measles vaccine under current recommendations.

The fourth reported death involved an 18-year-old from Mifflin County who died from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare neurological complication associated with measles.

Why Measles Can Spread So Quickly

Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases. It can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and people who have not developed immunity can become infected after exposure.

The disease can cause fever, cough, runny nose and a characteristic rash. While many people recover, measles can sometimes lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and inflammation of the brain.

The recent US measles outbreak has demonstrated how quickly infections can expand when the virus reaches communities where vaccination coverage is insufficient.

Vaccination Remains Central to Prevention

The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is the primary tool used to prevent measles infections and outbreaks. Pennsylvania’s health department says two doses provide 97% protection against measles.

Vaccination coverage has fallen in some communities, leaving more people susceptible to infection. Once measles begins circulating, high vaccination coverage is important for limiting transmission and protecting people who cannot be vaccinated, including some infants.

The US Has Faced Measles Before

The United States officially eliminated endemic measles transmission in 2000, meaning the virus was no longer continuously spreading within the country.

That did not mean measles disappeared completely. Cases continued to enter the country through international travel, but outbreaks were generally limited when vaccination levels remained high.

The current US measles outbreak has become more significant because transmission has continued within communities rather than remaining limited to isolated imported cases.

What Happens Next

The national case count continues to change as states report additional infections. CDC data show that 95% of confirmed US cases in 2026 have been associated with outbreaks.

Public health departments are continuing surveillance, testing and vaccination efforts as they respond to new infections.

The recent deaths serve as a reminder that measles is not simply a childhood rash. While many infected people recover, severe complications can occur, particularly among vulnerable groups. The scale of the US measles outbreak will depend in part on how effectively communities can limit transmission and maintain protection against the virus.
