Colombia Earthquake Leaves One Triplet Sister as Sole Survivor

A devastating earthquake in Colombia has left one young woman as the only surviving member of her immediate family after a residential building collapsed in Cali.

Ana María Saavedra Caycedo, one of three triplet sisters, survived the collapse but lost her parents, both sisters and an uncle. The family was inside their apartment when the powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10.

The 23-year-old was eventually rescued from the rubble with serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis and injuries to her arms. A door that fell around her during the collapse helped shield her from some of the debris, according to family members.

For Ana María, surviving the Colombia earthquake brought an unimaginable personal loss. Her rescue was followed by the devastating realization that almost her entire immediate family had died.

Her Triplet Sisters Were Among the Victims

Ana María had grown up alongside her triplet sisters, Sofía and Isabella. The three sisters were described by relatives and friends as extremely close and had shared major parts of their lives together.

Sofía was recovered from the wreckage several hours after Ana María was rescued. Isabella remained missing for several days as specialized rescue teams carefully searched through the remains of the building.

Her body was eventually recovered, confirming that all three sisters had been caught in the disaster. Their parents, Jairo Saavedra and Victoria Caicedo, were also among those killed, along with the family’s uncle, Diego Caicedo.

The loss has left Ana María facing recovery without the family members who had been central to her life.

Rescue Teams Worked Through the Rubble

The earthquake created enormous challenges for emergency crews working across western Colombia.

The magnitude 7.4 quake caused widespread destruction in several communities, including Cali, Pereira and other areas. Buildings collapsed, roads were damaged and thousands of people were left injured, displaced or missing.

Rescuers continued searching damaged structures for signs of life, sometimes working for hours or days in unstable conditions. More than 160 aftershocks were reported following the main earthquake, adding further danger to rescue operations.

The disaster has produced many heartbreaking stories, but there have also been remarkable rescues. Emergency workers have pulled survivors from collapsed buildings long after the initial earthquake, providing moments of hope during a devastating crisis.

Colombia Faces a Major Recovery Effort

The Colombia earthquake has become one of the country’s most destructive recent natural disasters. By August 15, authorities were reporting hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries and hundreds of people still missing.

The destruction has also affected homes, hospitals, schools and other infrastructure. Communities now face the difficult task of finding temporary shelter, restoring essential services and beginning long-term rebuilding.

International rescue teams and humanitarian organizations have joined local emergency workers as authorities continue responding to the disaster.

For Ana María, however, recovery is deeply personal. She must heal physically while coping with the loss of her parents, sisters and uncle.

The story of this Colombia earthquake family has become one of the most painful reminders of the human cost of the disaster. While rescue and recovery efforts continue across the country, Ana María’s survival stands alongside an extraordinary personal tragedy: she escaped the rubble, but was left without the family she had shared her entire life with.
