A listeria outbreak has affected at least 10 individuals across California and Nevada, prompting a voluntary recall of multiple ready-to-eat food items by a California-based producer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the outbreak has been traced to products distributed by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, located in San Fernando, California.
According to federal health officials, all 10 individuals impacted by the outbreak required hospitalization. These cases are part of a growing concern over foodborne illnesses linked to prepackaged, ready-to-eat items commonly sold in retail and food service establishments.
The potentially contaminated products were distributed across multiple western U.S. states including California, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington. These items were available for purchase in convenience stores, hotels, hospitals, airports, and even served on certain airlines. The variety of distribution points raises concerns about the reach and impact of the contaminated products.
Listeriosis, caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, can range from mild to severe. Most people begin showing symptoms within two weeks of consuming contaminated food. Early symptoms may include fever, fatigue, nausea, muscle pain, and digestive discomfort. However, in more serious cases—especially among those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, the elderly, and newborns—symptoms can escalate to include confusion, stiff neck, loss of balance, seizures, and even death.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the test samples from the affected patients were collected between December 2023 and September 2024. Six of the individuals were already hospitalized for unrelated conditions before developing listeria infections, suggesting possible cross-contamination or exposure within healthcare environments.
Initially, health investigators struggled to identify a clear source of the outbreak, despite reports beginning as early as late 2023. However, the investigation was reignited in April 2024 when FDA inspectors detected listeria in food samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods’ facility. Genetic testing later confirmed that the bacterial strain found at the facility matched that of the patients who became ill.
The company, upon learning of the findings, implemented a series of corrective measures. This included halting production lines and removing certain equipment to eliminate potential sources of contamination.
In response to the investigation, Fresh & Ready Foods issued a voluntary recall of multiple ready-to-eat items. The affected products carry “use by” dates from April 22 to May 19, 2024. They were marketed under several brand names, including Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
Consumers who may have purchased or consumed these items are advised to check their refrigerators and dispose of any recalled products immediately. Those experiencing symptoms of listeriosis are urged to seek medical attention, especially individuals in high-risk categories.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to remain cautious when consuming prepackaged meals.
