Israel Resumes War in Gaza: What Led to the Escalation?

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has officially collapsed, with Israel launching intense airstrikes on Gaza. The renewed conflict stems from multiple factors, including hostage negotiations, political pressures, and military strategy.

Why Did Israel Resume the War?

Israel cites Hamas’ refusal to release hostages as a key reason for its latest military offensive. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the attacks were a response to Hamas’ unwillingness to negotiate and the perceived threat to Israeli soldiers and communities. The government maintains that its war objectives remain unchanged: securing the release of hostages and dismantling Hamas’ military infrastructure.

Another major reason for the escalation is Hamas’ rejection of mediation proposals. According to Israeli officials, efforts led by US envoy Steve Witkoff aimed to extend the ceasefire, but Hamas declined the offer. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration views military pressure as the most effective way to compel Hamas into further negotiations.

Political Pressures in Israel

Domestic politics play a crucial role in the decision to resume hostilities. Netanyahu relies on far-right factions to maintain his government’s stability, and many within his coalition opposed the ceasefire. Ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich demanded a return to military action, even threatening to leave the coalition if Israel did not resume the war. Their influence has pushed Netanyahu to intensify the military campaign, securing their political backing.

Beyond coalition politics, Netanyahu’s decision comes amid growing controversy over his plan to remove the head of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency. The renewed conflict shifts public attention away from internal disputes, reinforcing the perception of strong leadership.

The Fate of Ceasefire Talks

The truce, which began on January 19, was intended to last 42 days, with discussions for a second phase scheduled for February 3. However, Israel did not engage in those talks, seeking new terms that would exclude a full military withdrawal from Gaza. In contrast, Hamas insisted on abiding by the original agreement, which required Israel to end the war in exchange for the release of hostages.

Negotiations continued through intermediaries in Qatar and Egypt, with the US engaging Hamas directly. A proposal for an extended ceasefire through Ramadan and Passover was put forward but rejected by Hamas, which accused Israel of undermining prior agreements. The growing divide between the two sides made the ceasefire increasingly untenable.

Impact on Gaza and Hostages

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening, with mass displacement and rising casualties. Israel’s military has warned civilians to evacuate certain areas, signaling the possibility of a ground invasion. With over 49,000 Palestinians killed since October 7, according to Gaza’s health ministry, the death toll continues to climb.

For hostages still held by Hamas, the renewed war complicates their fate. Families of the captives have expressed outrage, accusing the Israeli government of abandoning efforts to secure their return. With 59 hostages remaining in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to be alive, their release remains uncertain amid escalating violence.

US Involvement

The US has played a critical role in ceasefire negotiations and military decisions. The White House confirmed that Israel consulted with Washington before resuming attacks. While President Trump initially supported the ceasefire, he has since expressed strong backing for Israel’s military actions, demanding Hamas release hostages or face severe consequences.

What Lies Ahead?

With hostilities escalating, Israel is expected to increase military operations in Gaza, likely aiming to pressure Hamas into concessions. However, Hamas remains committed to the initial ceasefire terms, further deepening the deadlock. As the conflict intensifies, the humanitarian toll is expected to rise, leaving the region in continued turmoil.
