Russian Missile Barrage Strikes Kyiv: One Dead, Embassies Damaged

A devastating Russian missile attack on Kyiv early Friday morning resulted in at least one fatality, several injuries, and significant damage to embassies and infrastructure, Ukrainian authorities report. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the death on Telegram, noting that 12 individuals sustained injuries, with five hospitalized and others treated at the scene.

Early Morning Onslaught

Ukraine’s Air Force Command disclosed that Russia launched five ballistic missiles at Kyiv around 7 a.m., all of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses. In addition, 40 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were shot down, with another 20 drones failing to reach their targets. Despite this, debris caused substantial damage, including fires in multiple districts.

One district witnessed an office building, roadways, and gas pipes being damaged, alongside five vehicles catching fire, according to Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s Military Administration. Another district saw a blaze erupt at a construction site, adding to the widespread destruction.

Embassy Damage Sparks Outrage

The attack damaged several embassies housed in the same building, including those of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal, and Montenegro. Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, labeled the assault “barbaric,” highlighting shattered windows and doors in embassy premises.

In response, Portugal summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to formally protest the attack, citing minor damages to its diplomatic facility.

Russia Claims Retaliatory Strikes

Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that Friday’s missile strikes targeted Ukrainian military installations, describing them as retaliation for a recent Ukrainian strike on a chemical plant in Russia’s Rostov region. The plant was hit with American-made ATACMS missiles, according to Moscow.

Russia claimed its precision strikes successfully hit the SBU command post, the Kyiv Luch design bureau, and Patriot anti-aircraft missile positions. “The strike targets were achieved. All objects were hit,” the defense ministry stated on Telegram.

Zelensky’s Condemnation and Call for Sanctions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, reiterating the need for stronger sanctions against Russia. He also expressed gratitude to Ukraine’s allies for their continued support, emphasizing the importance of enhanced air defense systems.

Wider Assault on Ukraine

In addition to Kyiv, the southern city of Kherson came under heavy shelling on Friday morning as Russian forces advanced. Local authorities reported that two people were killed and ten others injured in the barrage.

Global Backlash Against Russian Aggression

The missile strike comes amid heightened tensions following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments challenging Ukraine’s leadership. This attack has drawn global condemnation, with Ukrainian officials calling for intensified international sanctions and support to counter escalating Russian aggression.

The assault on Kyiv’s embassies, civilian infrastructure, and residential areas underscores the ongoing brutality of the conflict, leaving a stark reminder of the war’s human and diplomatic toll.
