Home maintenance tasks for winter and spring

As the seasons change, it’s important to understand how the changing climate can affect your home. Often, during the colder winter months, your home needs special attention to protect against the elements. Then, as spring arrives, it gives you an opportunity to renew your living space. Here are some essential tasks for winter and spring:

Home maintenance tasks for winter:

1. Inspect and clean gutters

Remove leaves, debris, and any blockages to ensure proper water drainage. This prevents ice dams and potential water damage to your roof.

2. Check the roof

Inspect the roof for damaged or missing shingles. Repair any issues to prevent leaks during winter storms.

3. Service the heating system

Schedule a professional HVAC service to inspect and maintain your heating system. This ensures it operates efficiently during the colder months.

4. Seal windows and doors

Check for drafts around windows and doors. Seal gaps with weatherstripping or caulk to improve insulation and reduce heating costs.

5. Check outdoor taps

Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Install frost-free hose bibs or use insulated covers to protect outdoor taps from freezing temperatures.

6. Insulate pipes

Insulate exposed water pipes, especially in unheated areas like the basement or attic, to prevent freezing and potential bursts.

7. Chimney maintenance

If you have a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned. This ensures safe and efficient operation during winter use.

8. Test emergency systems

Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries and ensure these systems are in working order.

Home maintenance tasks for spring

1. Inspect the roof and gutters

Check for any winter damage to the roof and gutters. Repair or replace damaged sections and clean out any remaining debris.

2. Clean and service air conditioning

Schedule a professional service for your air conditioning system. Clean or replace filters, and ensure the unit is ready for the warmer months.

3. Check for pest entry points

Inspect the exterior of your home for potential entry points for pests. Seal any cracks or gaps to prevent unwanted guests.

4. Clean and repair deck/patio

Sweep and clean outdoor decks or patios. Check for any loose boards or nails and make necessary repairs.

5. Inspect exterior paint

Check the exterior paint for peeling or damage. Touch up or repaint areas as needed to protect the siding from the elements.

6. Service lawn equipment

Prepare your lawnmower and other gardening equipment for the upcoming season. Sharpen blades, change oil, and ensure everything is in working order.

7. Trim trees and shrubs

Prune overgrown branches and trim bushes. This not only enhances the appearance of your property but also promotes the health of your landscaping.

8. Check for leaks

Inspect faucets, hoses, and sprinkler systems for leaks. Addressing these issues early can save water and prevent damage to your property.

Regular maintenance throughout the year helps keep your home in good condition, prevents potential issues, and ensures a comfortable and safe living environment.
