Low-dose nicotine cigarettes approved by FDA

In recent years, many quit smoking products have appeared on the market. Products like e-cigarettes and NRT have shown to be effective in a lot of cases, and now, the FDA has announced the approval of new tobacco products that could help people quit.

The two new tobacco products, which are manufactured by 22nd Century Group Inc, contain much lower amounts of nicotine – the addictive substance in tobacco – than regular cigarettes. It’s hoped that this could reduce nicotine dependency and addiction rates in smokers.

However, despite being approved and meeting the current standards, the FDA has warned that these products are not completely safe for consumers as they carry many of the same health risks that traditional cigarettes and tobacco products do.

Because of this, the FDA also noted that these products should not be marketed in a way that’s attractive to young people and that there will be “stringent restrictions” in this area, especially when products are marketed online or on social media.

In addition to this, manufacturers will have to submit regular reports to the FDA about data it collects in studies or other research, so that the agency can see if young people are using the products and respond accordingly.

The FDA said in its announcement: “While today’s action permits the new tobacco products to be legally sold or distributed in the U.S., it does not mean these products are safe or ‘FDA-approved.”

“In its decision, the agency notes that the Moonlight and Moonlight Menthol cigarette products differ from conventional cigarettes in nicotine content only — the products share similar adverse health risks as conventional cigarettes.”

“There are no safe tobacco products and those who do not use tobacco products should not start. The FDA may withdraw this marketing order if, among other reasons, it determines that the continued marketing of a product is no longer appropriate for the protection of public health, such as if there is an uptake of the product by youth.”
