The latest updates to Facebook’s platforms

Trust in Facebook is at an all-time low. The Cambridge Analytica data scandal, along with concerns over the privacy and security of users’ data has resulted in the company’s user base declining since 2017.

At a conference this week, CEO Mark Zuckerberg pointed out that the company is aware of the public’s concerns over the site, and announced new updates to all of its platforms to try and address the issue.

The company has added new features to Facebook itself, as well as other platforms it owns – Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.

The changes focus on the privacy and security of users. For example, by restricting how content is shared, new encryption tools, and campaigns to encourage people to use the services in a more personal way.

Here are some of the changes that will be included:

  • Facebook

Facebook is the world’s largest social media platform. And it’s getting a facelift later this year – there will be a new design which the company says will make it easier to use.

As well as this, it will be launching a new feature called Facebook Dating, which will have a “Secret Crush” feature.

Users will be able to select up to nine friends that are interested in, and if two users both add each other to their lists they will be notified. If not, it will remain a secret.

  • Messenger

A number of changes are being made to the Facebook messenger platform. One of the biggest being the new end-to-end encryption by default. This is means that all messages sent will be completely secure.

In addition, the LightSpeed project will make the app faster to download and to load – improving the quality of the experience of its users.

A new desktop app will also be introduced. It will be available to  Mac and Windows users. Both this and the mobile app will have a Close Friends feature, where people will be able to share their stories with their chosen group of people.

  • WhatsApp

WhatsApp’s business version will soon be introducing catalogues. This will allow small businesses – especially those that don’t have a website – to have product catalogues.

These can be sent to users using the platform, and they can look at products without leaving the app.

  • Instagram

Facebook’s photo-sharing platform, Instagram, will also be adding a few new features this year. One that it’s testing is a feature that hides the number of likes on photos and videos.

It will also be expanding its retail capabilities by adding a new shopping feature, and its camera will be updated so that users can add more effects and stickers to their photos before posting them.
