The latest US food recalls

Whether it’s meat, poultry, salad, vegetables, or any other type of food, products that are contaminated in certain bacterias can make consumers sick. The latest warnings across the US affect a number of varieties of food. Consumers are being warned: be careful which foods you eat! But which products are actually affected? Here are the latest recalls affecting American consumers:

Curry Powder

The first product being recalled across America is some types of Baraka branded curry powder. The actual products to look out for, according to the FDA, are “Hot Curry Powder”, with UPC Code 822514265566; and Curry Powder, which has a UPC Code of 822514265535.

This is due to a reported high level of lead in these products, which was discovered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development.

The recall affects products that were shipped to Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, and Colorado, between the 15th and 31st of July. In addition to this, containers of the curry powder branded as Corrado, Orlando Imports, Nouri’s Syrian Bakery, Mediterranean Specialty Foods, and Butera Fruit Market, were recalled in Illinois, New York, and New Jersey.

The FDA say that limited exposure to these products is unlikely to pose a health risk. But, when consumed in large doses, symptoms of lead poisoning can include vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness, and seizures. Children can be particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning.

Beef products

The latest recall of beef products in the US is due to an outbreak of salmonella. This is ongoing, and so far, the CDC has reported another 63 cases of the illness, bringing the total to 120. This has affected consumers in 22 different states. No deaths have been reported; however, there have been 33 reported hospitalizations.

The brand names of the products that have been recalled were being sold in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming Hawaii, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington  under various brand names.

These brand names include Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart and JBS Generic. The USDA inspection mark, which can be found on the packaging of the products, is “EST 267”.

Chicken products

The latest CDC report says that, so far, a total of 92 individuals, across 29 different states, have been affected by the latest outbreak of salmonella. This has been linked to chicken products. There have been 21 reported hospitalizations. Consumers are being warned that products from a range of sources may have been contaminated with the bacteria and that a single supplier hasn’t been identified.

Salmonella can cause symptoms including diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting. It can also be spread from person to person. Therefore, the CDC recommends that hygiene practices like hand washing before preparing or eating food, and after contact with animals, should be undertaken. Also, consumers should make sure that raw chicken is thoroughly cooked before eating to kill any harmful bacteria.
